The Paris Herbarium (Herbier de Paris), located in the Jardin des Plantes, Paris 5, has more than 2 million of cryptogam herbarium specimens (fungi, algae, bryophytes, etc.) and more than 6 million of phanerogam herbarium specimens. This collection of vascular plants also includes many specimens in the form of fruits and seeds. The collections have been gathered since the 17th century and enriched over time through the expeditions of botanists and naturalists, but also through deposits and legacies, as well as exchanges between institutions. New specimens are added every year. In addition, the xylotheque has been built up since the 19th century and has 15,000 wood samples.

All of the world’s regions are represented in the collections. They are the basis for numerous researches, mainly in taxonomy. They are also used as a reference tool to help non-specialists to identify plants. The labels of collecting plants are also a source of information for other disciplines (ecology, ethnobotany, history of science, etc.).

Several visits of the herbarium will be proposed during the IWAA conference, with different themes: in addition to the general herbarium, it will be possible to visit the xylotheque, the carpotheque or the ethnobotanical collections.
